Yes, I watched Memoirs of a Geisha when it was first came out. And yes, Fushimi Inari Shrine (or Fushimi Inari Taisha) went onto my bucket list as soon as I saw that scene where little Chiyo runs through the hundreds of orange/black gates in her Japanese clogs. How beautiful was that scene?! Come ON.
So if we were going to Japan for the first time, we are definitely seeing Kyoto and Fushimi Inari Shrine would definitely make it to my top 3 list.

We could’ve checked out Yasaka Shrine (or Yasaka Jinja) in the daytime. And I’m sure it’s quite a beautiful sight to behold, but I just really wanted to see the lanterns light up Yasaka Shrine at night. Did I make a good call? You bet!

We could’ve stayed in Kyoto proper and explored the city, but a visit out to the suburbs of Arashiyama beckoned. Because you can not travel to Kyoto without seeing the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. So we took the train from Kyoto station and half an hour later, we found ourselves in tourist central.

We hopped the Shinkansen (or bullet train) and arrived in Kyoto tonight. After checking in to our hotel, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo, we oriented ourselves with a walk around the area.
We were trying to make our way over to Pontocho area to get some food, but somehow ended up at Kiyamachi Dori, a picturesque, one kilometre street with the Takasegawa canal running through it. Better yet, it was lined with 200 cherry blossom trees in full bloom.
