Corey Hart: Never Surrender Tour Hits Vancouver

Last time Corey Hart played Vancouver, it was 1985 at the Pacific Coliseum. I was too young to go back then. It was always a concert regret for me. Out of the hundreds of concerts I’ve gone to in my life, his was one of the ones I wished I had seen (another was David Bowie’s Glass Spider tour). Especially when I watched the televised farewell concert Corey Hart held at the Bell Centre in Montreal years ago. He performed 38 songs and sang for nearly 4 hours!

I finally got my wish with the Never Surrender tour – Vancouver being the final stop in Corey Hart’s cross-Canada tour.

Reflections on Japan


Sean and I have always wanted to visit Japan. For our 10th anniversary, we were able to do so. And it exceeded all our expectations and has become one of our favourite places that we’ve traveled to. I would love to go back some day to explore more.

Japan is a country of bemusing contrasts – incredibly modern, while at the same time, holding on to its traditions. Food, culture, history, architecture, technological accomplishments, anime, pop culture or whatever you’re into, Japan has it all.

Traveling to Japan During Sakura Season


I was worried about the possibility of missing out on sakura season in Japan. Weather can be a crap shoot and as sakura season is a short one, all you can do is make an educated guess (with the help of an almanac), cross your fingers and hope for the best.

As weather is unpredictable from year to year, we could’ve easily missed sakura season by a week or more.

Tattoo Friendly Public Baths in Japan

One of the things we wanted on our trip to Japan was to try out the onsen experience (especially after a long day of touristing). We both enjoyed the nude Zuiver Spa when we were in Amsterdam a couple of years ago, so we thought we’d do it again in Japan.

But we soon found out that onsens forbid visitors who have tattoos because of its association to yakuzas. You won’t even see many young people with tattoos, as it’s not considered socially acceptable in Japan.

Sean and I both sport a tattoo or three between us, so we looked to hotel accommodations (within our price range) with tattoo friendly public baths (or sentos). Not a surprise – there weren’t that many.
