A Day in the Life of a ‘Shammer

It’s amazing how a 2 hr train ride could bring you into such a totally different environment than the one you’ve been in the past couple of weeks.

My visit out to Evesham, Worchestershire was just an overnighter (about a 30 hour visit) and as I rode back into London tonight, the countryside felt like a world away and that I couldn’t believe that I had been out of the city for just a day.

I had got to spend time with Mat and his flatmate, Leonie. Although it’s not football mania here because England didn’t even qualify for the Euro 2008 championships, we had watched the Portugal v. Germany match last night. Being 1/4 Portuguese, that meant I’d naturally root for Portugal, however Germany took it 3-2 at the end.

As I never seen The Mighty Boosh, Mat made sure to expose me to one episode of this comedy, which had a similar sensibilities to The Flight of the Conchords and ended the night with more British comedy goodness in Run, Fatboy, Run. We love Simon Pegg. Today after work, Mat made sure I watched at least one Black Adder episode, a classic British sitcom.

We sauntered through the park, along the lovely river Avon and over to Wetherspoons, known for ‘cheap and cheerful’ food. I ordered fish n’ chips with side of peas – proper English fare and met the revolving door of Mat’s motley crew of good friends, dropping by and making their start of the weekend appearances. These ‘Shammers are a young fun bunch and I got a taste of Evesham life, ‘shamming it up on the town.

My train was leaving 920pm and the sun was just starting to set in the Evesham sky. This is the very reason why I love the English clouds and sky. It’s absolutely stunning ~ looks like foam on an ocean surf. Breathtaking!

I was a bit sad that this visit was so short, but I was glad to have visited, even if just a day. And now I think I know why I’ve felt so out of sorts when I got back to London…it’s the feeling of staying with friends at their flat (instead of on my own, letting from strangers), the camaraderie of going out and having times (vs. introspective and independent sojourns on the town), but mostly the joy of hanging out and catching up with a friend you haven’t seen for over a year and the disappointment of having to say bye again, so quickly.
