There is no going around the importance of girlfriends. These girls, my family, are essential to my well-being. And I feel especially blessed that, regardless of the hustle and bustle with what’s going on in our personal lives, we can put everything, and I mean everything on hold, if only for a few hours to spend time together like we did when we were in our 20s.
The 2 best things about this past girly weekend:
Peggy and I watching a burlesque-lite performance at the old Balthazar’s and indulging in the chocolate pate and crème brûlée desserts. Then, almost by accident, we checked out Celebrities nightclub and found ourselves in a time-warp. Generation Y was going off to the sounds of our house music from a decade past. It was identical; down to the last bpm. It was complete deja-vu, however, the big diff? We were better dressed back in the day, Even with the glitter and all.
After a bit, we crossed-town to the only club that I would go to in the city on a Friday night. Actually, the only club I would go to since moving back to Vancouver last fall – Honey Lounge – where we danced our cabooses off to the sounds of 60s mod, R&B, northern soul, mod revival, Britpop, new wave and indie tracks.
Sunday afternoon was a triple treat: catch up session with 3 girlfriends, celebrate Suzie’s birthday and of course, going to the female equivalent of the Star Wars movie, Sex and the City.
Ah, the clothes, the shoes, the glamour, the lifestyle, the love affair that is New York. It’s no wonder I moved there. And having spent 2 years there, I got all the inside jokes/NYC references.
This show was our required viewing, before heading out for a night of debauchery. Now older and wiser, we may have outgrown our crazy antics, but our friendship are as tight and precious as ever. Needless to say, the movie had us laughing and crying, leading up to an ending that was uplifting and thoroughly satisfying.
Thank goodness for girlfriends, Sex and the City and Honey Lounge.
