Now that my presentation is done, I can relax and enjoy me some LA, conference and invites!
Dinner was at Taipan Chinese restaurant at the Wells Fargo Centre. It was fun chatting with the ladies around me who hailed from Fort Worth Opera, Nashville Opera, Virginia Opera and New Century Chamber Orchestra, but the real fun to be had was apres dinner.
I accompanied Edward and Risé of San Diego Opera and Brandon of Florida Grand Opera to a steampunk bar called The Edison. What was once an old power plant is now a lounge, fashioned like a 30s speakeasy/hideaway. Very prohibition era. There are people who come dressed up in vintage zoot suits and flapper dresses. (not tonite though)
The cavernous and subterranean lounge mashes Art Deco and the machine age. Details such as portraits of by gone actresses like Theda Bara and light bulbs with filaments, mingled with an engine room, a boiler room, power generators, a grand staircase made of cantilevered concrete and copper plates. There’s even a vintage pump organ too.
Oh, and let’s not forget the many silent movies being projected on the dimly-lit walls and the turn of the century jazz music coming through the house speakers. I felt like I travelled back in time.
The place is old world cool. A hidden gem. And you’d never know what you’re in for when you walk down that alley to find the Edison’s entrance.
Very sexy. In fact, we’re going back tomorrow nite.
