Day Job

Onwards And Upwards

Sad news today. Due to a sudden and major re-structuring at VO, my position as social media manager has been eliminated. (along with 3 other full-time positions: managing director, assistant to the director of artistic planning and corporate giving coodinator and a handful of part-time/contract positions too)

I’ve had a wonderful time at VO the past 3.5 years. I’ve worked alongside the most amazing and creatively brilliant people. I’ve learned so much about opera. And loved every minute of it. I’ve gotten to know what it means to be passionate about working in the non-profit arts sector.

I got to befriend the online community that I built for the VO. (opera people, not as tame as one might think!)

I got to meet my colleagues from opera houses all over the world. And know that these friendships will extend past my time at the company.

Thank you to everyone for all your love, encouragement, advice and support during my time as VO’s social media manager. You are what made my job worthwhile.

This is a scary but exciting time for me. And I look forward to seeing what’s next. hopefully, bigger and better things.

Stay tuned….

That sucks. You did so much awesome work for the VO, and it won’t be the same without you. You introduced a whole bunch of people to opera, most of whom were like me – people who thought “eww, opera” and went on with their lives. You are completely awesome, and I know you’ll find something in need of your mad skills soon – thank you for all you did for the VO and Vancouver’s SM scene, from this side of things. 🙂

Ling – I just stepped across your work via Facebook as I was commenting on a German post about social media folks at culture institutions. You have done a great job, it feels like I would be in your seat. Similar happened to me while working at BMW – building up awareness for social media, building the crowd (inside and outside the organization), providing the field from which the new can emerge over time.

We are probably all gardeners of great parks – once the park is established we move on to create new ones! That the flow of explorers and visionaries 🙂

Check out http://facebook.com/Semperoper.Ballett and http://facebook.com/JungeSzene where I post quite a bit, even though I am not the “official” social media guy 🙂
