Ladies Of The 80s

The only person that could ever get me out in public, dressed up in bad 80s gear would be my bestie, Peggy. And only for a special occasion.

Getting our 80s on.

Well, that was this weekend. It was Peggy’s milestone birthday and to celebrate, we went to the Spinning the 80s: Big Hair, Big Hits, Big Hijinks show at the Giggle Dam, a dinner theatre venue that puts on comedy sketches and musical parodies, accompanied by a 8 piece live show band and a 4 course dinner.

The show was split up into 2 acts. The first act was the interactive sketch comedy:

It’s the 80s and record store owner, Blaze Hammer, British punk rock enthusiast and all-around music lover, discovers that his sales of records are dwindling due to the onslaught of a new, cold and sterile technology to the music market – the dreaded CD. I mean, like, gag me with a spoon! Join Blaze and his crackpot team of totally tubular misfit employees at “for the record” as they perform desperate attempts to save the dying vinyl market and the integrity of music on earth as they know it.

Ozzy’s bitches.

A stroll down amnesia lane, the show was chock-a-block full of 80s references – from music, to tv and movies, slang and bad fashion. And when it was intermission, the cast, in character, would mingle with the audience. ‘Sonny Crockett’ even persuaded Peggy to join in the raucous on-stage antics.

Peggy played the lovestruck fan in the skit.

After the intermission slash dessert service, the performers sang their own rock renditions of the biggest hitmakers from the 80s.

For $55 per person, I’d say it was good value for the money. You get fed and entertained for 4 hours. Great for birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor(ette) parties or team-building.

They were even kind enough to commandeer the stage, at the end, in order to take cheesy photos. We were in 80s character, after all.

A cheesy pose for a cheesy decade.

Never thought I’d have to live through the 80s again, but it was actually kinda fun. And only for one night.

From one Aquarian to another, from one child of the 80s to another – happy birthday, my wonderful friend!
