On what was the hottest day of the year (so far), Peggy and I went to the second annual Food Cart Fest down at Olympic Village. So what if Vancouver was in the middle of a record-breaking heatwave and that there was hardly any shelter from the sun down at the venue.
We were there to have the eats!
There were 20 food carts to choose from and almost of all them had lineups at least 20 deep. Many of the food carts were meat-heavy, so we decided on Yolk’s Breakfast.
I ordered the poached free-range egg sandwich with panko-tempura avocado and aged white cheddar on an english muffin. As I was waiting for more order to come up, the guy behind the counter was telling everyone who picked up their poached egg to be careful when eating as the yolk will burst and they would likely end up wearing it. A courtesy warning or a unique selling point?
One food cart was all we could muster. Waiting for the food and melting in the heat banished what was left of our appetites. And when it’s that hot, you don’t want to eat anyways. All I wanted to do was seek shelter in the shade. And maybe in front of a fan. However, we ended up sitting down by the water and watching the long weekend party boats sail by.
I lasted longer than I thought I would, sitting out in the mid-day sun. But as there were no trees down by the rocky beach, I was left with a souvenir of our fun day out.
I may be Asian, but I don’t tan. I burn. Must be all those years of avoiding the sun. Ouch.
