To quote one of Douglas Coupland’s sign in his Vancouver Art Gallery exhibition, Everywhere is Anywhere is Anything is Everything, “It’s not an illusion. Time is moving faster.”
I recently asked someone who was retired if life moved more slowly for them, now that they were no longer raising a family or no longer working. You know what their answer was? NO. Sure there had more free time, but if one fills that time with activities, the speed in which days, weeks, months and years passes remains unrelenting. Well, that’s just awesome.
I’m not even asking to stop time – just slow it down and maybe stretch it out.
Because how did we get here already? Where did 2014 go? Flew by like some supersonic aircraft.
Well, let’s not waste any more time then. Cue the recap:
January: Leave it to me to start the new year with wrenching my knee so badly, that I need the help of crutches just to get around. Plus cold laser therapy. But I recovered in time for Sean’s niece’s wedding in Whistler.
February: I still dream of Iceland. 2015 will be the year of Iceland. Birthday celebrations at fancy pants hotel. Nine inches of the white stuff. NINE! Still stranded and buried. We ain’t going anywhere.
March: Even after 3 years of not working at VO, I’m still getting recognition and that’s feel bloody fantastic. Anniversary celebrations at an even fancier pants hotel. Channeling my inner Daryl Dixon.
April: Sean gets to meet one of his childhood idols. And I was so happy that I could make that happen. After 5 years together, Sean surprises me with flowers. How active am I on twitter? I pass the 10,000 mark and dedicate it to futurist Jason Silva. My little blog turns 6.
May:I temporarily get a taste of what it feels like to be old and with crappy eyesight. I’m in love with these 2 and you should be too. Creeping on the fella. 10 pound weight on my chest and I love it. The grounds of Casa de Sullichan.
June: Visiting our four legged friends at Maplewood Farms. Channeling our inner Ewoks at our stay in a swaying sphere in the forest. Plus bunny for our dinner companions. Tigh-Na-Mara’s grotto > Playboy grotto. Plus goats on a roof! So many encounters on our island getaway.
July: Hooted, hollered and danced my tukis off at the New Order concert. Work sends me to MozCon. Amtrak loves my image and wants to feature it. San Francisco! 3 days of unescapable family time before having some me time at Asian Art Museum. Buying me some space food + NASA memorabilia and bowing down to Android overlords at Googleplex. A visit to Star Wars mecca.
August: Wedding slash family reunion. Mi familia. Riding in ducks and other Monterey shenanigans. For nerds, a visit to Academy of Science is a must. Getting gritty for some urban graffiti in the Mission. A reason for another trip to Cali. Winter came to Vancouver in the form of Game of Thrones exhibit.
September: Animal kingdom at Seattle’s Woodland Zoo. Fangirling so hard on Kirstine Stewart, head of Twitter Canada. Work conference in Victoria. Getting my float on. My love for this band has no bounds. Catching an Interpol gig. My fifth time.
October: New Bose headphones keep me from going postal on colleagues. The first time we go to a pumpkin patch but didn’t have any money to buy pumpkins. A backwards Rosie the Riveter for office Halloween.
November: The thought did cross my mind about being Lo-Pan, instead of Gracie, for Halloween. If I’m parked on the couch, this is what I’m watching. Good thing we left the staff holiday party when we did. Because snow.
December: Moist plays in my backyard. Les chats noirs. Little niece turns 8 and can kick some ass. Happy holidays from the Sullichans. Christmas with the S.O.’s family in Victoria, where I got bit by a dog for the first time in my life.
When you’re living life day to day, it may seem like nothing much is happening, but upon reflection with this recap, a lot of memorable things took place. Although I only went on one trip this year, I had additional opportunities to travel in the form of getaways and 2 work-related trips. I got to catch up with all my cousins and welcomed a new one into the fold. There were many animal adventures and fan-girling over bands plus a woman in tech. Sean even got his fanboy on this year.
And although it may be a wee bit more subdued than 2013, I consider this year to be a staging year for 2015 when I’ll (hopefully) break out the big guns on travel.
Here’s to more good times and good health! Happy New Year, everyone!
