Every year it’s the same old feeling, same old blur. How did the year pass by so quickly? There seems to be no putting on the brakes of this full-steam ahead train car.
Although the year started out as sad and shocking (I’m still feeling gutted about David Bowie), 2016 treated me really well. It was certainly a fab year of travel! (one of my trips being on the dime of my work – not too shabby!)
Let’s travel back in time and reflect on what happened in 2016:
January: David Bowie passed away and the world is left reeling. Checking out all the twinkly lights at Van Dusen Gardens.
February: Feeling younger already at the Scandinaive Spa in Whistler. The Pan Pacific hosted a TED reception and dinner.
March: Wasn’t sure I could but was able to stomach the Animal: Inside Out exhibit at Science World. To being awed by the actual space suit and capsule that Felix Baumgartner used when he decided to free-fall to earth at a height of 128,000 feet! We celebrated our 7th anniversary by getting our glamp on at Rockwater Secret Cove Resort.
April: Celebrating our friend’s last days of being a single lady. Our favourite spring time activity: on the hunt for cherry blossoms. 10 years of celebrating being a pescetarian and not eating meat.
May: Up close and personal with OJ the jaguar. An afternoon at the opera. Digging on the Mash Up: The Birth of Modern Culture exhibit at the VAG. Mucho expensive, so I’m going to do my own Ferris Fest in Chicago. The best thing I’ve seen at The Art Institute. Checking out the Bean and the spitting Crown Fountain by Millennium Park. Meeting Tyrannosaurus Sue at the Field Museum. I’m in Ferris Bueller’s room! You’re Abe Froman? The Sausage King of Chicago? I met Chez Quis maitre d’, Jonathan Schmock! Plus I got to sit in the 1961 Ferrari 250GT California from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off movie. Recreating the Twist + Shout scene from the movie with 3,000 other fans. Walking out onto the ledge of a 103 story building – the 2nd tallest in the US. Cleaning up nice for our friend’s wedding.
June: The Kills killin’ it at the Commodore. Scoring a tix to the sold out previews of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child show in London. Checking out the New Tate Modern on its opening weekend. A pilgrimage to the David Bowie wall in Brixton. Being absolutely wowed at the WB’s Making of Harry Potter tour. No, Jon Snow. Just no. I love this movie so much, which is why I had to seek out the Kingsmen Secret Service HQ by Savile Row. Costumes at the V+A and more Harry Potter madness. Berlin’s Museum Island is huge. Getting surreal at the Dali Museum at Leipziger Platz. Super wowed by the wet collection room at the Museum Für Naturkunde. Climbing the Siegessäule aka Golden Lizzie because I wanted to feel like the angels in Wim Wenders’ movie, Wings of Desire.
July: There’s no place like home. Vancouver after a holiday.
August: Feeling all Wes Anderson-esque in New York. Running around in the dark and feeling rather Eyes Wide Shut at the Sleep No More experience. Ghostbusting and seeing Sean’s work in Final Fantasy XV movie at Times Square. Getting our geek on at the Star Trek Starfleet Academy Experience. Feeling grateful that the Manus X Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology exhibit was extended! Screaming our heads off at PNE. Dancing my tukis off at the Duran Duran concert, in the fancy suite.
September: Being transported away by Sigur Rós.
October: Getting our Canadiana on with a double bill of I Mother Earth and Our Lady Peace. Getting spooked at the live version of Night of the Living Dead. Pet Shop Boys bring their ravey, visual spectacle of a show to Vancouver.
November: when Evil Dead’s Ash met Medusa the gorgon. Attending our friend’s documentary screening.
December: Getting up hella early for my second Christmas Wish Breakfast at the Pan. Snowmegeddon in Vancouver. Getting all flouncey for Sean’s work’s Christmas party. Christmas greetings from Casa de Sullichan. Celebrating New Year’s Eve at Canada Place and the Pan.
I can only hope that 2017 will be as great as this year – especially in the travel department. I have big plans that I’m hoping to fulfill!
Here’s to 2017. Wishing everyone happy new year!
