Is it surprising that I went to check out FIFA World Football Museum? Is it a bigger surprise that I actually enjoyed it? Even more so than the Kunsthaus Zürich, Landesmuseum Zürich, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst and Museum für Gestaltung.
I’m not a football fan, but for the 2008 season, I did end up watching some Liverpool games on cable TV and I quite liked Steven Gerrard. And then when I was working at EA, football was ever present, what with my coworkers being super fans and breaking up the workday by playing FIFA 11.
The FIFA World Football Museum was built in 2016 and is home to the FIFA world cup trophy and over 1,000 exclusive exhibits about the history of international football and how “the beautiful game” connects and inspires the world. There are tons of interactive and multimedia displays plus features the national jerseys of all FIFA members. So colourful and eye-catching!
There are four floors to the museum. You start on the planet football floor (0), which celebrates all 209 FIFA member associations. Here you can find your favourite team’s shirt, look through the history of football timeline and listen to the words and sounds of football.
Then you descend to the historic heart of the museum, the Foundations + the FIFA World Cup gallery floor (-2). The Foundations exhibit pays tributes to football pioneers, including the women’s football team. At the FIFA World Cup gallery, you can check out one of the most valuable trophies in the world, the FIFA World Cup, up close.
Before leaving the floor, you step into the small theatre to watch an 8 minute short film called “The Final”, highlighting all the great triumphs and losses. And yes, I do love me some triumphant soundtracks. It makes my heart soar.
Taking the elevator up to the fields of play floor (1), shows the impact football has had on the world. Here you can check out stories, play games, and learn about football.
The museum tour ends at the cafe-bar, bistro and shop floor (2) or where you spend all your money on football related merchandise and souvenirs.
Overall, I really enjoyed all the displays at FIFA World Football Museum. Dare I say, it’s one of the best and most entertaining museums I’ve ever been to. Football fans will sure make a stop here, but even if you’re a casual fan, I definitely recommend it. You may even develop an appreciation for “the beautiful game” after a visit.
