Zoo Zürich’s Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park is architecturally stunning and definitely one of the zoo’s biggest highlights, but the zoo is also home to over 380 animal species, including one of my favourites, the orangutans.
I find these highly intelligent, compassionate and endangered species so endearing, which is why after spending time at the elephant park, I spent most of my time hanging out with the Sumatran orangutans.
The 9 orangutans, ranging from 2 years old to 50 years old, are a part of the 160 animals belonging to the European conservation breeding program. Here’s a couple of pictures: Xira (20 years old female), Timor (42 years old female), Mimpi (5 years old female) and Malou (5 year old male).
When the orangutans climbed up to their rope hammocks for their afternoon naps, I explored the rest of the zoo. A few more pics from my walkabout:
The animals at Zoo Zürich live in areas designed to mimic nature and their natural habitats as closely as possible, including recreations of mountainous cloud forests, wetlands, highlands, deciduous and dry forest, grassland, desert and tropical rainforests. and in a way, that’s what makes this zoo different than others – the beautiful habitats.
The Lewa savannah is currently being built beside the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park, which will then house white rhinos, giraffes and Grevy’s zebras from Kenya. The expansion is expected to be completed in 2020.
