In a city that’s known for its history, pastel coloured buildings, Mozart and The Sound of Music, one might wonder why there’s an airport-sized hangar, Red Bull owned, futuristic building at the Salzburg airport? Is that a disconnect? What’s is Hangar 7 doing out there?
Well, that stunning architectural work of art, made up of 1,200 tons of steel and 7,000 square metres of glass, houses Red Bull founder and Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz’s collection of F1 racing cars, as well as, being home to the Flying Bulls.
It’s also here where you can see Red Bull Stratos pilot Felix Baumgartner’s wing suit and capsule. Do you remember his record-breaking jump from the edge of space in 2012? I remember watching it live, in all its jaw-dropping incredibleness.
And even though I already saw his wing suit and capsule up close at Science World in 2016, it was still a thrill.
Hangar 7 is part museum, part working airport, part bar/lounge and part restaurant, with Michelin starred guest chefs doing pop up stints. What a cool concept. If you want a bit of futurism in a city of history, check it out. It’s just a cab ride away from the old town.
