The Arctic Monkeys return to Vancouver! One of my favourite bands ever, debuting songs from their most recent album, Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino.
I love the Arctic Monkeys. They’re all over my blog. I love Alex Turner. I love his The Last Shadows Puppets side project with Miles Kane. Musically, they can do no wrong, however, (and I may be in the minority here), their AM album is not my favourite. Sure, it’s their most commercial album to date, breaking through North American charts. And yes, it has plentiful top 40 bangers on it, namely R U Mine?, Do I Wanna Know?, Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?, One for the Road, Arabella, and Snap Out of It, but I don’t think it’s their best album. No, just me?
I’m bringing this up because out of the 21 track set list, 7 of them came off of AM. I do dig on the new tracks off Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino. The songs were a definite departure from the rest of their albums, with its Bowie-esque, mellow, lush, spacey, lounge lizard feel. It felt like I should be listening to the Arctic Monkeys perform in a cabaret lounge. If only! That would’ve been so purr-fect.
Still, I’m always appreciative of an Arctic Monkeys concert. It’s been a while. Can’t wait to see what you fellas come up with next time around.
