2018: A Retrospective

And just like that – 2018 comes to an end. Welcome 2019!

Hope everyone had a great year. For me, 2018 was a year of re-grouping. I was (f)unemployed for the first half of the year, having been laid off one job and finishing a contract with another. Eve though I wasn’t making much money while I was on EI, I really enjoyed my time off, especially since I had been going hard, working 2 jobs for 2 1/2 years.

That sabbatical was great too because we adopted ourselves a new kitten. I got to be totally present watching our little furball, Luna, grow. She’s my favourite thing about 2018. I even happily gave up going a major trip for her.

But unfortunately, even (f)unemployment had to come to an end. Because money. I landed a job at an post-secondary institute and also took three courses in the fall semester to level up my skills and work towards completing my marketing management certificate. (2 more courses left!)

So it’s been a quiet. A year of hunkering down and laying the foundation for a more exciting 2019. Here’s hoping!

Let’s rewind and reflect, shall we?

January: Luna! Luna was so wee at 3 lbs. Spicing up our lives with a girls get together.

February: At 4 lbs, Luna is still so wee. Birthday low brow/high brow meals. So in love with this little face.

March: Ok, maybe it wasn’t love at first sight for these two. One short of a decade! In my earlier life, I would’ve been at the blackjack table for hours.

April: Another superflat exhibit we just had to check out. Because Takashi Murakami. I would go back just for the blueberry ice cream cake. My blog turns 10! That’s so many words.

May: Hawaii for our combo birthday/anniversary celebration. Even Kilauea didn’t stop us. (almost!) My feet gets hella burned walking on hot lava rocks, while wearing flip flops. Such a rookie mistake. Waimea cloud action. Road-tripping to see some kii at Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park. Golden hour from one side of the island to the other. Took this pic and got myself 2 mosquito bites as a reward. Being wowed by Akaka Falls. Dining at what might be The Rock’s favourite place to eat in Hilo. An out of this world sunset + stargazing at 13,796 feet. Going to Mauna Kea is a long time dream come true. One day heading up to the highest peak in Hawaii, the next playing around in a lava tube at Kaumana Caves. Oh the colours of Hawaii.  We could’ve hitched a ride down to Waipio Valley, but how easy would it be to find a ride back up? Do we have to go back to Vancouver?

June: Missing Hapuna beach. If you’re wondering if you should go to Hawaii, go. Reflections on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our little Luna goes into writhing mode. Dita von Teese, the queen of burlesque, comes to the QET. The 90s girl in me loses it watching Trashcan Sinatras play live for the first time in Vancouver.

July: A weekend on the sunshine coast, being all fancy and luxuriating at the Painted Boat’s spa garden.

August: The 80s girl in me dances her tukis off at the Erasure concert.

September: The Hammer goes on its first official trip. Getting wowed at the VR/AR Global Summit.

October: I’m a lucky bitch for winning last minute tickets to Beyonce and Jay-Z. Luna’s first birthday! Kung-fu classic movie a la Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. A very space-tastic Arctic Monkeys concert.

November: Channeling Hela, Commander of the legions of Asgard, the rightful heir to the throne and the Goddess of Death. The fella launches a Youtube channel. Make sure to subscribe.

December: In another life I could be working in a newsroom. Holy poop! I’m in a Ferris Bueller documentary. Christmas greetings from Casa Sullichan.

A quieter year than I would’ve liked, but sometimes you need it, right? I’ll just chalk it up to reserving my energies, and getting my ducks in a row for an awesome 2019. Happy new year, everyone!
