“I’m the man, baby. That’s what I am...”
That’s the song that Philosopher Kings opened up with at their Imperial Theatre show. And after 20 years since I last saw them in concert, this band still gets me hyped.
Philosopher Kings will always hold a special place in my heart. Growing up in the 90s, with your TV permanently tuned into MuchMusic, you could not escape their purr-fect blend of soulful, funky, jazzy, pop hits. There was no other band with that kinda sound on the charts. And that’s what made them distinctive. Plus Gerald Eaton’s voice, charisma, and stage presence!
The venue was intimate, making it an up close and personal experience for the fans. The band was super tight – playing off each other and owning the stage. Their energy was palpable and infectious. You can tell the band was really enjoying themselves and you couldn’t help but smile, groove and sing along. They’re true musicians and a band that’s meant to be heard live.
Even though they haven’t toured very much in the last couple of decades due to their other side projects (love Eaton’s Jarvis Church), the Philosopher Kings prove that they have staying power. And I am still here for it.
Here’s the Return of the Kings setlist:
