Did you know that you can get hang out with alpacas here in BC? And that one of those places, Kensington Prairie Farm in Langley, is just a 45 minutes drive from Vancouver?
And what better occasion than when my bestie, Peggy, comes to town that we should go on a trek to see these adorable Huacaya alpacas? If you already think llamas are cute, wait until you catch a load of alpacas. They’ll put a smile on your face and a giggle in your heart.
Both llamas and alpacas fall under the camelid family. Both have long necks. But where they differ is that llamas are bigger, have long faces and ears, whereas alpacas have smaller ears, are furrier in the head and have smushed faces. Both have goofy horse-y smiles.
It’s kind of like the difference between Icelandic horses (short, adorable and docile) and any other kinds of horses.
Kensington Prairie Farm offers weekly tours but only once on Saturdays between 1030am-1115am. Although space was all booked during Peggy’s visit, we were permitted to walk around the grounds on a self-guided farm tour and “visit” with the alpacas.
Most of them kept a healthy distance, although they were curious about us, especially as Peggy was making what I could only say, hilarious bird (?) calls to try to lure them over to us at the fence. OneĀ of the alpacas even put on a show for us, feeling all frisky and riding a slightly unwilling partner back to the barn.
We were so charmed by these delightful creatures, that we’ll have to book a proper tour next time to see all the alpacas up close and personal.
Or perhaps go back to Krystle Acres Alpaca Farms on San Juan Islands in Washington. Bonus: I could do with another bioluminescence tour too!
