Thank the ceiling for Stay Vancouver’s gift card promotion!
It is the reason why I can book all the 4 or 5 star hotel stays that I do. The promotion incentivizes locals to book a stay at any of the participating downtown Vancouver hotels during low (and sometimes early shoulder) season. In doing so, guests will get up to $125 Mastercard gift card (previously Visa gift card), which you can use towards dining, shopping, or you apply it to your room charge – which I always do.
And if you want to book more than one night, you’ll receive $50 gift card for each subsequent night booked.
Whenever the promotion comes around, and I’m craving a staycation, I always make sure to book at least one hotel stay. That’s how I came to check out Hyatt Regency, Shangri-la, and Loden Hotel. With such a deep discount, I’m paying just a fraction of the nightly room rate. It’s quite affordable when split between 2 people and a (well-deserved) splurge if one person footing the entire bill themselves.
This time around, I thought I’d check out Fairmont Waterfront. Having stayed at Pan Pacific Hotel lots of times for work, I’ve always been curious about this 5 star hotel across the street.
And honestly, I was underwhelmed. The guest room is rather spacious, but the decor is just not my jam. It had all the amenities other hotels I stayed in had. Besides the view of the hotel’s 2,100 square foot herb garden, it didn’t really wow me.
Not saying it sucked, but it’s just not my style. However, I got to spend a night away from home and felt fancy for a night, so that’s still a win.
Having said that, if I had stayed in one of Fairmont Waterfront’s Fairmont Gold rooms, I might be singing a different tune. However, the promotion didn’t apply to that concierge level of accommodation.
Mind you, the cost of Fairmont Waterfront was lower than what I paid for in the past staying at other hotels, so it wasn’t a big a risk trying somewhere new. Live and learn while I continue to celebrate myself this milestone year.
